Join us in concert when Chicago Jazz Orchestra and renowned vibraphonist Thaddeus Tukes celebrate the music of the jazz vibraphone from its origins in Chicago to its established place in the current jazz scene.
The modern vibraphone was born in Chicago, when J. C. Deagan, Inc., unveiled the vibraharp in 1927, and in 1930 Louis Armstrong invited the young Chicago musician Lionel Hampton to a recording session. Their version of "Memories of You" is the first known jazz recording to incorporate the vibraphone. And jazz has been using the vibes like crazy ever since.
Thaddeus Tukes is a vibraphonist, composer, arranger, and bandleader, hailed for bringing “poetry to the vibraphone” (Chicago Tribune). He has released three albums under his own label, Vibetown Studios. He has performed as a bandleader and special guest at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, with the South Side Jazz Coalition and at jazz clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout the United States.
