American Legion Post 184 requests your assistance with our annual Veterans Day event at Herndon’s Chestnut Grove Cemetery on November 11th, where we honor local veterans by displaying 69 casket flags. We invite you to participate in raising and lowering these flags to celebrate Veterans Day and also to join Post 184 at the Town of Herndon Veterans Day Celebration on the Town Green at 11:00 AM. Details for all events are provided below.
To volunteer to help with raising and lowering the flags, please email [email protected] with your name and whether you can assist with raising, lowering, or both. Flag lowering is our most critical need, as two volunteers are required per flag.

Flag Lowering: 4:30 PM on 11 Nov
Flag Lowering is our most critical Need
Location: Chestnut Grove Cemetery (831 Dranesville Rd, Herndon, VA 20170).
Volunteers should arrive at 4:30 by the Cemetery office. Lowering and folding flags takes about an hour with enough volunteers.
We start with a short memorial to Post 184 namesake Wayne M. Kidwell and then flags along the main avenues will be lowered, folded, and cased by pairs of volunteers.
Inclement Weather: In case of rain, small flags will replace the casket flags and are deployed by Post members. Volunteers will be notified by email if the casket flag display is canceled.
Thank you in advance for volunteering to honor those who have served.
