Join Trans Pride Hastings and Women's Voice for the launch of Lamble's first book Unsafe: The Carceral Roots of the Anti-Trans Backlash.Over the past ten years, fears about cis women's safety have been used as the main reason to restrict the rights and freedom of trans people. Across the political spectrum, a powerful and seductive narrative has taken hold: that control, exclusion and policing of difference are necessary to secure safety. But what does 'safety' really mean and feel like? And who do these politics make safe or unsafe?
Lamble's book dives into feminist and queer traditions as well as their experience organizing against prisons and policing, to make a principled case for a different vision: one where safety is not built on punishment but on collective care, radical solidarity, and transformative justice.
Lamble is a community organiser and professor of criminology and queer theory at Birkbeck, University of London
Janey Starling is a feminist writer and co-director of gender justice campaign organisation Level Up. She currently spearheads a national campaign to end the imprisonment of pregnant women.
