Under the direction of John Beasley, the Library of Congress pays tribute to the all-time giant trumpet player, composer, bandleader, painter, and cultural icon, Miles Davis. Celebrating the centennial of his birth, this concert covers each decade of Davis’s career and explores the extraordinary legacy of an artist who transformed the course of American music and influenced generations of musicians across music styles. The program also highlights Davis’s groundbreaking collaborations with arranger Gil Evans, Davis's collaborator for the “Sketches of Spain” album, drawing inspiration from the Library's recently acquired Gil Evans Collection. Through performance and historical context, the event celebrates Davis's enduring impact on American music and the creative partnerships that helped define a new artistic language for the twentieth century. Part of the Library’s celebration of America 250.Preconcert lecture: Miles Davis at 100 with Guthrie P. Ramsey Jr., PhD
