About this Event
From grassroots anti-racist activism to leading international campaigns on climate justice, gender equity, and social protection. Shahin Ashraf’s story begins in multicultural Handsworth, Birmingham, where she grew up.
Today Shahin is Head of Global Advocacy and Research at Islamic Relief Worldwide, and has experience in humanitarian action, women's rights, refugee support, climate justice and civil society leadership.
Her journey has taken her to local politics in Solihull, where she became an elected councillor for the Green Party. She was also the first Muslim and first Muslim woman to be mayor of Solihull (2024–2025).
She has been an inspiring advocate for communities, throughout her work - shaping policies and action through a social and economic justice lens.
Shahin will join Unite The People’s Haki Kapasi for an up close, personal and reflective in conversation at the BRIG Café at the Warehouse on Thursday 26th November at 6pm.
Unite The People (UTP) is a collaboration with Birmingham Race Impact Group (BRIG), Stand Up to Racism Birmingham, Kings Heath United Against Racism (KHUAR), and community partners across Birmingham.
Thanks to Gary Younge and colleagues, supported by funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, for enabling the Unite the People check-ins at the BRIG (Birmingham Race Impact Group) café.
