Title: 'Understanding and addressing the ‘Muslim student degree-awarding gap’: Inequality, exclusion, and possibilities for change'
Abstract:
Given the current socio-political climate, understanding the unique challenges faced by Muslim students, who represent ~25% of Greenwich’s student population, is more pressing than ever. In this interactive workshop, Dr Maisha Islam contextualises the burgeoning access, success and progression inequalities affecting Muslim students in higher education whilst simultaneously highlighting their exemption from institutional practice, sector policy, and regulatory oversight. In highlighting these issues, colleagues will be encouraged to discuss their own praxis to addressing these issues, whilst also raising avenues for positive change and sense of belonging at the university.
Bio:
Dr Maisha Islam is the Research Culture Lead for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Southampton’s Doctoral College. Her research areas of interest and expertise centre student engagement, and racial and religious equity in higher education. She is a co-editor of the recently published book ‘Uncovering Islamophobia in Higher Education: Supporting the success of Muslim students and staff’, and co-Chair of a Research England/Office for Students Steering Group seeking to improve access and participation of racially minoritised students in postgraduate research.
