About this Event
Hosted by me, Fabio Pop, a local freelance type designer and accidental type foundry, the workshop will encourage exploration, non-precious sketching, and discussions about spaces both positive & negative.
Our exercises require no special tools – any paper stock & writing tool will do the trick – and the whole shebang lasts about an afternoon in an open format, meaning that there will be no blocks or breaks, so you may come & go as you please.
Donations to The Hague Creators are most welcome (even encouraged, if you have the means), but attendance is completely free of charge. Here’s the what to expect:
- First up, I’ll give a bit of context about who I am and what on earth type designers such as myself even do for a living
- I will then explain how the workshop is about thinking about letters through the combined lenses of sketching & iteration
- Over its course, we will (myself included) think of words and draw them, in whatever style we’d like to
- We will then come up with an adjective that describes our respective drawings – wide, thin, friendly, round – whatever
- But here’s the kicker: after we have an adjective, we will draw the exact same word, but using the opposite of our original adjective
- If the first word looked wide, we’ll need to draw it narrow, or if it was friendly then it needs to be menacing ← you get the idea
- I will quickly sketch out a couple of examples before the participants which is also the level of quality we will be going for
- I will then be going around, giving individual feedback to participants
Remember: there are absolutely no expectations or pressure to deliver. The point is to think about and react to what you have in front of you –not to stress about drawing quality, eventual social media posts, or how it compares to other drawings by other people.
