Learn to use humor to access truth, gain perspective, and harness anxiety
About this Event

There's no way around it: being a human is hard. The good news is that hard is the petri dish of great humor. And besides the delight of laughing, using humor to grapple with life's toughest stuff can help you access what's going on, gain perspective, and harness anxiety (aka imagination) to feel lighter.

This workshop is about playing with humor. That is, not why humor is important or the benefits of it - we’ll cover that in ten minutes - but the actual mechanics, getting into the specific tools and how to use them. It's a set of skills stand up comedians use all the time that everyone can learn.

You'll walk away knowing how to:

  • Actively work with all the material and feelings you already have
  • Practice 5 specific skills to figure out what’s really going on *
  • Shift your narratives, meaning, and emotions to feel lighter

If you’re interested in turning hard stuff - whatever that may be from things that happened to you or if you're having a hard time with your job, your relationships, your kids, your parents, your apartment, or your body, we'll make up for reminding you of it right here by helping you find the humor in it.

This first workshop in the three-part series will focus on getting to the truth of what is actually going on. Folks who sign up for this workshop will get $10 off these two future workshops. It's great, but not necessary to attend all three.

  • November 12th: Apply filters to gain perspective
  • December 3rd: Harness anxieties and imagination to make "what if..." helpful

Join us to vent about or process your life, share your experience, laugh, and discover how to forever see all the hard things that happen to you as material.

Space is limited to 10 people so secure your spot soon. If you have any questions, email [email protected]. Members, reach out to get discount code for $20 tickets.

Workshops are held in Dupont Circle at the DC Writers' Salon, a studio and community for writers. The Salon helps us make space and time for what we love to do: write. But more than that, it invites us to engage with the otherwise solo, and sometimes grueling, process of writing in a way that's more connected and accountable. Learn more at DCWritersSalon.com.
