About this Event
These two evening sessions are a chance to explore different stages of the textiles process. From exploring the translation of craftsmanship skills into industry of textiles; exploring from spinning to weaving with a detour exploring colour too.
Soft drinks and snacks will be available.
Hosted by GSA alumna Helena Powell
Helena has spent her degree to explore the production but also craftsmanship that ultimately translates to production skill set. She explores the maths and chemistry for different stages of the process as well as questions ethical and sustainable to compare different routes and different outcomes for these pieces. From training with handweavers, to micro mills to medium scale British Mills, Helena has explored the different scales and where the comparative craftmanship transcends the scale and exploring how machine imitates particular processes of a craftsman.
This project has been noted for sustainability awards in addition to be a pillar of how Helena continues her practice to this day. Through her practice, Helena works in the mind of constantly asking how and why, exploring notably grey areas of textiles manufacturing and understanding deep rooted understanding of the process. Her philosophy stems from a reflection of history, craftmanship and questioning how did textiles become a third largest pollutant and easily disregarded when not too long ago it was a symbolic status.
Access is on the ground floor of the Reid Building, flat access to the room with accessible toilets nearby.
