Join Transition Belper for a special screening of How Deep Is Your Love?, a fascinating documentary directed by Eleanor Mortimer that takes us 5,000 metres beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean, into a mysterious underwater world few of us will ever see.
Following a group of marine biologists, the film explores the extraordinary creatures living in the deep sea. Many are new to the researchers, who give them temporary nicknames such as “Barbie Pig” as they try to understand these remarkable and often otherworldly life forms.
But this incredible ecosystem faces a growing threat. The seabed contains clusters of mineral nodules that are attracting interest from major corporations seeking to mine the deep ocean. Before mining can begin, organisations must understand what could be lost. Could the process of discovering these extraordinary creatures also mark the beginning of their destruction?
Described as a visual extravaganza, with dazzling footage of creatures that look as though they belong on another planet, How Deep Is Your Love? offers a rare glimpse into a largely unexplored world and raises important questions about our relationship with the natural environment.
🎤 Stay for the discussion
The film runs for 100 minutes, followed by a discussion facilitated by Henry Bennett.
Henry has 25 years of scuba-diving experience around the world and has also worked with engineering companies producing equipment for the deep-sea mining industry. A dedicated environmentalist with a passion for the oceans, Henry brings a unique perspective to the conversation about deep-sea exploration, mining and the future of these fragile ecosystems.
Come along to discover the wonders of the deep ocean, explore the environmental questions raised by the film and join the discussion.
Please check the cinema's booking arrangements for ticket availability and prices.
We look forward to seeing you there!
