TOUR OF EASTERN INDONESIA Explore the Birds of Indonesia with John Sterling!
Join the Yolo Bird Alliance for our September program featuring John Sterling of SterlingBirds, who will enlighten and entertain us with a virtual birding adventure through Indonesia—one of the most spectacular regions in the world for avian diversity and endemism.
John will take us island-hopping through eastern Indonesia, from Flores to Waigeo, before ending the journey in mainland West Papua, home to an extraordinary abundance of New Guinea endemics. More than 130 bird species in the region are endemic to a single island or small cluster of islands, so expect to see photos of remarkable birds that relatively few birders have had the opportunity to encounter.
John’s passion for birds began in fifth grade, when he spotted a Pileated Woodpecker during an environmental education camp in his native Napa County. He went on to study wildlife science at Humboldt State University and began his ornithological career in 1981. Since then, he has traveled to more than 50 countries in search of birds, often working as a researcher or tour leader.
Closer to home, John enthusiastically birds all 58 California counties and has developed a growing interest in iNaturalist and documenting as many forms of life as possible.
