About this Event
This walking tour explores how Kingston upon Thames has repeatedly adapted to major economic change over the past thousand years — from an ancient royal village and a medieval market town, through imperial trade and industrialisation, to aviation manufacturing and retail.
The tour uses Kingston as a case study in economic resilience: why particular industries emerged, what caused them to decline, what replaced them, and how industrialisation and imperial expansion reshaped the town.
Designed particularly for Hong Kong immigrants living in the UK, the tour will connect Kingston's local history with the wider histories of the British Empire and Industrial Revolutions, while inviting participants to reflect on Hong Kong's own economic transformations and current challenges.
