The structural complexity and technical brilliance of Chopin's Ballade Op. 23 cemented his transition from the pianist-composer that took the Paris salons by storm, to a composer of serious stature. Tim Horton, whose monumental, recently-concluded Chopin Series at Wigmore Hall garnered significant critical acclaim, frames the piece with Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 2 No. 2 and the tempestuous 'Appassionata' Sonata, written the year that the composer finally came to terms with his irreversible deafness.
