Three local authors will discuss and sign copies of their new books, all published by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press, on Thursday, October 29, 7 pm, at the East Bank Regional Library (4747 W. Napoleon Avenue in Metairie).
📖 'The Roads We Travel' by David Armand
'The Roads We Travel' is a memoir told in the style of Anne Lamott’s 'Bird by Bird,' Stephen King’s 'On Writing,' and Ellen Gilchrist’s 'The Writing Life.' Instead of approaching the pedagogy of creative writing in the traditional academic, prescriptive manner, Armand uses his own life’s journey to becoming a successful writer and teacher as a way to pass on what he’s learned over the years about what makes good writing work (as well as what makes some writing unsuccessful).
Recipient of the 2022 Louisiana Writer Award, David Armand was born and raised in Louisiana. From 2017 to 2019, he served as writer-in-residence at Southeastern Louisiana University, where he is currently associate professor of creative writing. An award-winning author, Armand has published four novels, four collections of poetry, a memoir, and a collection of essays.
📖 'Hear This! A Twisted Tale of Sonic Torment' by Jon Hébert
New Orleans rocker Jon Hébert cranked his amp up to ten every night for years. Suddenly, a rare hearing sensitivity disorder turns his amplifier’s lowest setting into a source of agony, sending him spiraling into chronic pain, isolation, and a crisis of identity that costs him the thing he loves most: music. Part dark comedy, part medical mystery, part psychological thriller, 'Hear This!' chronicles one musician’s bizarre quest for relief—and his attempt to find healing, humor, and hope in a world gone completely off-key.
Jon Hébert is a musician, writer, and artist. Aside from comedy, he writes mysteries and thrillers. He lives in New Orleans with his girlfriend and their blind cat, who edits most of his work.
📖 'Skylark' by William Christy Smith (Chris Smith)
Beston Barnett, a newly minted creative writing graduate, cannot find a job in his field. He takes a volunteer position leading a writer’s group consisting of HIV-positive men who meet each Wednesday night at Skylark, a restaurant in New Orleans’ Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. His students have a lot of fun but don’t produce much, Beston decides he will document their lives and deaths, adventures and misadventures, loves and battles. 'Skylark' was shortlisted for the 2020 Faulkner Wisdom Literary Contest, novel category. It was runner-up for the 2021 Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction and was a finalist for the C. Michael Curtis Short Story Book Prize from Hub City Press.
'Skylark' is William Christy Smith’s first novel. He is primarily a short story writer who specializes in southern gothic themes based on the horrors of the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri, a master’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Chicago, and a master’s degree in arts administration from the University of New Orleans. He lives in New Orleans and is a regular participant at the Tennessee Williams/Saints & Sinners literary conferences. He is a member of the Saints & Sinners Hall of Fame and serves as editor of The Triangle, the online literary journal of the Publishing Triangle.
