Researching Plymouth's Fisheries with artist Anne-Marie Culhane
About this Event

Join Anne-Marie Culhane for a guided visit to Plymouth’s Fish Quay with Edward Baker, exploring the species currently being caught, the challenges facing the fishing industry, and its connections to Plymouth’s maritime culture, ecology, and heritage.

You’ll meet fish merchants, buy some locally caught fish, and share a meal prepared by Max Phillips (vegetarian options available). The session will also include time for reflection, questions, and discussion, giving you a chance to consider the broader social and ecological networks behind the food on our plates.

Practical details:

  • Meet on the roundabout next to Plymouth Fisheries.
  • We’ll walk together to Ope for the meal.
  • Please bring notebooks for sketching or writing.
  • Wear warm clothes and bring a flask or drink.

This session is part of an on-going enquiry led by Owen Griffiths as part of There is No New Water – Toolkit for Ocean Citizen Action. This 10-month project invites local people to explore what the ocean means to them, reflect on their role as coastal citizens, and co-create a community-led artwork/toolkit focused on ocean justice, care, and climate action.

All sessions are free and open to anyone based in Plymouth who is passionate about Ocean Civic Justice and happy to spend time in the East End.

Ocean Cultures is a two-year programme funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, aiming to establish a community-led model for ocean climate justice in Plymouth, UK.
