The English Touring Opera return to Exeter Library with a new relaxed theatre show made for SEN and neurodiverse children and their families.Mimi is lonely. Everyone at her school has something unique about them, soft lemur tails, golden wings. Everyone except Mimi. Then she meets a boy called Sonni, and something incredible happens: donkey ears sprout from her head. Thrilled with her new friend, Mimi goes on a quest around the school to become as cool as she can be. But as she gets drawn into everything shiny, is popularity all she hoped for?
Co-created with students at Briarwood School in Bristol, Mimi and the Golden Touch retells the Greek myth of King Midas, and explores friendship, belonging and the power of being yourself. Written by Malaika Kegode (The Colour of Dinosaurs), composed by Vahan Salorian, directed by Lucy Bradley and designed by Sascha Gilmour, the show tours SEND schools and libraries this autumn.
Everyone is welcome, with the show designed for SEN and younger audiences in mind. The performance takes place in the Children's Library on the ground floor, which is fully accessible, and runs for around 60 minutes. This is a relaxed performance: audiences are welcome and encouraged to make noise, get up, move around, and do whatever helps them feel comfortable.
The English Touring Opera have brought magical, high-quality productions to Exeter Library for years. If you loved The Great Stink, The Wellies or Ada and the Code Crusaders, you'll love this too, even if opera isn't usually your thing.
