2027 Provisional Dates announced: 8 Weekends – April 10/11, May 1/2, May 22/23, June 12/13, July 3/4, July 24/25, Aug 14/15, Sept 18/19
Growing out of Tai Chi and Jenni's research into experimental voice work over 45 years: Therapeutic Voice Work, Indian vocal music, post-classical Extended Vocal Techniques and signal-led group vocal improvisation - this is for people who want to deepen their intuition and imagination as soloists and as vocal participants and leaders of an intuitive choir.
You will come away refreshed, with new practical approaches to your improvisation drawing on a simple model of the voice while having had deep space to listen to yourself, witnessed and expressed back to you by others through spontaneous writing, a practice rare to find in this world and one that has proved a treasure trove of insights and healing for people.
The work becomes your inner guide to devising your own one-to-one sessions and workshops, making new pieces, expanding your expressive range, and innovating your own ideas.
It is an apprenticeship in the old fashioned sense of the word - working with someone who has a lifetime of experience in vocal improvisation and who's teaching is so embedded in her that she doesn't plans sessions. The work is immanent and emergent and led from the depths of an inner knowing that Jenni calls on, similar to when she is composing.
Jenni is flexible and responsive to the needs of the individual and the group. She only makes changes in the schedule, based on consensus, while being mindful of practical limitations as they appear.
Committed apprentices attend all eight weekends; drop-in practitioners with previous experience of Vocal Tai Chi or The Improvisers' Choir can join for part of the journey (per weekend, per day, or per half day) and some will be joining for the final Risk and Share presentation too.
Jenni has led voice work sessions since 1989. She was recently a featured artist vocal improviser alongside legendary free improvising singers - Maggie Nicols and Phil Minton. Her track "Orb" with pianist Cassie Yukawa-McBurney has her improvising over Bach Prelude No. 1 in C major as part of Land Mass - a surreal vocal-visual liturgy for the land - sung by The Improvisers' Choir, conducted by JR.
