About this Event

What happens when you outgrow the business you built?

Sometimes entrepreneurs don't lose their drive because they're burned out. Sometimes they've simply outgrown the role they're still trying to play.

Join The Unordinary for an intimate evening with entrepreneur, advisor, and lifelong reinventionist Scott King as we explore what happens when success itself becomes a ceiling and your next level requires you to become someone different.

Scott's path has rarely followed a straight line.

From farm kid to hairdresser, retail entrepreneur, financial services owner, networking leader and business advisor, he has spent much of his life building, losing, rebuilding, exiting and beginning again.

Thirty years ago, Scott opened 12 retail businesses in six years. By year seven, he had lost everything. He spent the next decade rebuilding. Then he exited.

He built again, this time in financial services. Then he exited again.

Through every chapter, the same lesson kept returning: reinvention requires a willingness to bet on yourself before you know exactly how the next chapter will unfold.

Today, at 60, Scott has stripped away everything that isn't The Breakthrough Year and entered what he calls his Decade of Dreams.

No more keeping every door open. No more half-committing. No comfortable fallback.

Burn the Ships: The Visionary's 7-Year Itch

At this edition of The Unordinary, we'll explore Scott's provocative idea that the founder who created the business can eventually become the very thing holding it back.

We'll get into the uncomfortable questions that successful entrepreneurs eventually face:

  • How do you know whether you're burned out or you've simply outgrown your role?
  • What happens when the business that once gave you freedom starts defining you?
  • Why do visionary entrepreneurs seem to experience a recurring urge to reinvent?
  • When is it time to evolve your role rather than keep optimizing what's already working?
  • What does it actually mean to “burn the ships” when you have something real to lose?
  • And how do you bet on yourself again when there are no guarantees?

This conversation is for entrepreneurs, founders and business owners who have already built something but have started wondering whether the version of themselves that got them here is capable of taking them where they want to go next.

This is a conversation about what happens after you've succeeded at becoming the person you once wanted to be and realize you're ready to become someone else.

Join us for an evening of candid conversation, connection and ideas that may change the way you think about your next level.

Reserve your seat for The Unordinary with Scott King.

THE EXPERIENCE

The evening begins with food, drinks and open connection, giving you time to arrive, settle in and meet people before the formal program begins.

Lindsey will then open the room and introduce our special speaker.

The main conversation is designed to feel more like a live podcast than a traditional panel: intimate, specific, honest and practical.

You’ll hear what happened behind the visible milestones, how they started, what challenged them, what they questioned, what changed them, and what they understand now that they couldn’t have known at the beginning.

Then the room opens for live audience Q&A.

Ask the question you actually want answered. Afterward, there’s more time to stay, talk and connect with people you may not have met anywhere else.

The Unordinary is built for the conversations that rarely happen from a stage and the people willing to have them.

HOW THE NIGHT RUNS

5:30 PM Doors open, drinks, photos, connection prompt.

6:00 PM Open, food, and drinks. Connect before the formal conversation begins.

7:00 PM Welcome and The Unordinary Lindsey interviews the featured guest. A live conversation about the real story, the uncommon path, and the hard-earned lessons behind what they built.

7:30 PM Live audience Q&A. Ask any questions you might have.

8:00 PM End of the night

Lindsey Machona knows what it means to build a life that does not follow the expected script.

When she arrived in Canada, she had international education, experience, ambition, and no Canadian work history. Like many immigrants, she had to rebuild from the ground up in a system that did not immediately recognize what she carried.

Her path did not unfold in a straight line.

She went from rebuilding her career in Canada to moving from an administrative role into an Executive Director seat. Years later, she ran for Member of Parliament in Edmonton.

She built The Unordinary because most people only talk about the visible outcome. Very few talk about the invisible becoming.

The relationships, risks, rooms, identity shifts, and moments when life asks you to stop waiting for permission and move differently.

Everyone teaches the climb. This room is about the uncommon path.

WHY LINDSEY IS HOSTING THIS

The Unordinary is for people who are building beyond the ordinary.

Founders, professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs, community builders, leaders, emerging leaders, career changers, operators, visionaries, and anyone creating a life, body of work, business, or path that does not fit the expected script.

You do not need a certain title, income level, industry, or public platform to belong here.

This room is for the curious, the ambitious, the thoughtful, the brave, and the becoming.

People who want better conversations. People who want to meet others who are building, questioning, growing, risking, creating, and refusing to sleepwalk through an ordinary life.

Whether you are building a company, a career, a community, a creative body of work, a new identity, or a second act, you are welcome here.

Curiosity is the only entry requirement.

WHO THIS IS NOT FOR

The Unordinary is not for people looking for a surface-level networking event where everyone collects names, exchanges business cards, and leaves unchanged.

It is not for people who want polished success stories without the truth underneath them.

It is not for people who are only interested in status, titles, or being seen in the room, but not willing to be present in the conversation.

This is not the room for anyone looking for quick hacks, empty motivation, or a shortcut to success.

It is also not for people who come to perform importance, dominate conversations, pitch aggressively, or treat other attendees like leads instead of humans.

The Unordinary is for people who are willing to listen deeply, ask better questions, share with honesty, and respect the stories in the room.

You do not have to have everything figured out.

You do not have to be at the top of your field.

You do not have to be loud, polished, or already successful.

But you do have to come with curiosity, openness, and respect.

This room is not built for spectators.

It is built for people willing to be moved, challenged, connected, and reminded that ordinary was never the only option.
