“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” said Alice.“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
– Lewis Carroll
In this modern world, we are constantly asked to make choices that impact our future – advertisers tell us that if we wear the right perfume, creepy strangers will give us flowers, and that eating only this and never that will give us “dewy” skin (whatever that means) – yet we rarely are given the tools to predict, reliably, the consequences of our choices.
Sure, basing some decisions on hopes, dreams, or (shudder) feelings is simply part of being human. But what about when action (or inaction) is crucially, critically, existentially important to, oh, let’s say … all life on the planet?
When considering the future of the global climate, wouldn’t it be helpful to “see” the results of our choices before we actually make them? Is there a way to forecast, with confidence, the consequences of our potential decisions? It turns out that, with enough data and some very computationally heavy systems, there is (thanks, science!).
At the November salon, examine the science behind global climate simulations with system dynamics modeler, Drew Jones. Important: if concepts like “computer stuff” or “math” make you anxious or sleepy (or both), don’t fret – this presentation will be accessible and dynamic (with hollering always encouraged). Drew is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit Climate Interactive, which develops state-of-the-art climate simulators to help world leaders explore climate policy and solutions. In addition to creating powerful, science-backed simulators that illuminate complex interactions within climate systems, Drew is an expert on international climate and energy policy and has worked with leaders across the globe (e.g., U.S. Congress, UN climate negotiations COP27, …) to guide development of climate initiatives and critical policy decisions.
Doors: 5:00 PM. Explore interactive science models, have a drink with old friends, make new ones, and get set for some serious science in a seriously un-serious setting.
Presentation: 6:45 PM. Then stick around for Q&A, discussion, and your community of curious people.
