In this free presentation, author Andrew Waters will highlight the life and early career of Francis Marion, charting his evolution into the "Swamp Fox" of Revolutionary War legend and fame. Waters will also discuss the challenges facing the historian faces in writing about Marion, whose early biographies were filled with much legend and unsubstantiated anecdotes.
For this discussion, Waters will draw from his book "Backcountry War: The Rise of Francis Marion, Banastre Tarleton, and Thomas Sumter," profiling the Revolutionary War's tumultous fighting in the Carolinas during the summer and fall of 1780. For its excellence in historical writing about the American Revolution, "Backcountry War" was recently named a finalist for the Americnan Battlefield Trust's prestigious "Military History Book Prize."
