About this Event

How has the Bengali short story evolved over a century of political and social upheaval? Arunava Sinha explores this question through his recently edited anthology, spanning literary traditions from West Bengal and Bangladesh.

The event will centre on his recently edited anthology, The Penguin Book of Bengali Short Stories. Using the anthology as a starting point, Arunava will explore the evolution of the Bengali short story over more than a century, bringing together literary traditions from both West Bengal and Bangladesh. The talk will examine how Bengali writers responded to colonialism, partition, gender, caste, social change and political upheaval, while also reflecting on the role of translation in introducing Bengali literature to a global readership. It will also discuss the making of the anthology and the place of Bengali literature within wider conversations on world literature.

The event will consist of a talk followed by a Q&A with the audience.
