The Open Road will introduce audiences to music for choir and guitar that speaks to America’s story. Walt Whitman’s Civil War poems set beautifully for guitar and choir by Minneapolis-based guitarist and composer Jeffrey Van and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s experience as an immigrant fleeing fascism invite listeners to consider the past while reflecting on present-day themes of sacrifice, belonging, and hope.A Procession Winding Around Me puts us on the battlefield as Whitman, a nurse during the Civil War, describes the horrors and the beauty that surrounded him during that awful time in America’s history. Romancero Gitano is the work of an Italian-Jewish composer whose immigration story mirrors that of many who have shaped Minnesota and the United States. Romancero Gitano, based on Spanish texts by Federico García Lorca, brings global perspectives that invite our community to engage with artistic traditions beyond our borders. We will conclude this season opening performance with beloved American folk songs arranged by René Clausen, Stephen Paulus, and Shawn Kirchner that you won’t want to miss!
