A real end of year treat as we present La Gamme, the final masterpiece by the extraordinary Marin Marais.Huw Daniel, one of the OAE’s leaders, says “I have been looking for an opportunity to perform La Gamme for a while—this is a 35-minute piece for violin, gamba and harpsichord in the form of a small opera.” The very simple plot device of a rising and falling scale provides a stage for the remarkable virtuosity and harmonic invention that marks out Marais’ music. The second set in tonight’s gig will include pieces by Rameau and Buxtehude.
The Night Shift is our series of informal chamber music gigs – literally music for smaller rooms, in the home or other places where people socialise. They’re a chance to hear the members of the OAE playing music that they’re passionate about and bringing in a wide range of musical influences. So come along, grab a drink with friends (or meet some new ones) and enjoy the music.
