The Mask and the Masterpiece: Neurodivergence, Midlife, and the Individuation Threshold
What happens when the identity you've spent a lifetime carefully constructing begins to unravel, and the unravelling turns out to be the point?
This presentation explores the experience of late-diagnosed autistic and ADHD women navigating midlife through a Jungian lens, where the unconscious begins to surface what has long been masked, suppressed, or performed for survival.
Drawing on depth psychology, current neurodivergence research, and the particular clarity that only lived experience provides, Bron examines how AuDHD masking mirrors Jung's concept of the persona. And how its collapse in midlife so rarely signals breakdown, and instead offers something far more significant: the beginning of genuine individuation. Autistic burnout, hormonal transition, and identity disintegration are reframed here not as pathology or problems to be solved, but as the soul's insistence on finally being known.
Attendees will leave with new language for the midlife threshold, fresh frameworks for understanding neurodivergent identity formation, and a more nuanced, compassionate map of what it truly means to unmask and become.
Presenter | Bronwyn Lea Davis
Bronwyn Lea Davis (aka Bron) is a counselling psychotherapist (MACP), somatic practitioner, and creator of the STARR Method , a trauma-informed, narrative-based framework for identity reclamation and nervous system integration.
A late-diagnosed autistic and ADHD woman in midlife herself, and the homeschooling mother of three neurodivergent teenagers, Bron has lived the landscape she works in long before she had language for it.
She is the author of a book on autism and the founder of SAAIF - a Victorian advocacy organisation whose past community reach included hosting internationally recognised voices in the neurodivergence space.
Her clinical and creative work sits at the intersection of depth psychology, neurodivergence-affirming practice, and lived experience, with a particular tenderness for women who have spent decades being highly functional, while silently unravelling.
Drawing on Jungian individuation, compassion-focused and person-centred approaches, and subconscious imagery processes, Bron supports the kind of identity reconstruction that midlife demands when unmasking finally begins.
She is known for her grounded, sharp, and genuinely warm presence, and for making the unconscious feel less like a threat and more like a homecoming.
