What happens when two people experience the same love story from completely different points in time?
The Last Five Years is an intimate, emotionally charged musical that follows the five-year relationship between Catherine Hiatt, a struggling actress, and Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist.
But their stories don’t unfold together.
Cathy begins at the end of their marriage and moves backward through their relationship, while Jamie begins with their first date and moves forward. Their timelines meet only once, at the moment they say “I do.”
Told through Jason Robert Brown’s celebrated score, The Last Five Years is funny, tender, painfully human, and an exploration of love, ambition, timing, and the distance that can grow between two people even when they once believed they were headed in the same direction.
Phoenix’s production brings the story into an intimate theatrical setting at The Arts Asylum, placing the audience close to Cathy and Jamie as their relationship unfolds and unravels.
