The Hip Complex: Functional Anatomy & Biomechanics for Manual Therapy The hip rarely works—or hurts—in isolation.
Restrictions in hip mobility can influence the pelvis, lumbar spine, gait, and movement throughout the lower extremity. And when a client walks into your treatment room complaining of hip, gluteal, or low-back discomfort, simply treating the area that hurts may only tell part of the story.
Understanding how the hip is moving, what may be limiting that movement, and how those findings should influence your treatment is where clinical reasoning begins.
The Hip Complex is an 8-hour, hands-on continuing education course designed to help massage therapists bridge the gap between anatomy, movement assessment, and treatment.
Rather than approaching the hip as a collection of individual muscles, we’ll examine the relationships between the hip joint, pelvis, surrounding soft tissues, and functional movement—and use what we find to make more intentional treatment decisions.
Throughout the day, you’ll learn and practice:
• Functional anatomy and biomechanics of the hip complex
• Palpation of key bony landmarks and musculature
• Assessing active and passive hip range of motion
• Recognizing common movement restrictions and compensatory patterns
• Using assessment findings to identify functional limitations within your scope of practice
• Differentiating between common hip presentations
• Active and passive myofascial release techniques
• Neuromuscular techniques for targeted hip musculature
• Facilitated stretching and PNF
• Techniques to address common mobility restrictions and repetitive-use patterns
• Selecting manual therapy techniques based on what you find during assessment
• Proper positioning, draping, bolstering, and therapist ergonomics
• Basic client self-care recommendations
• Recognizing when referral is appropriate
But the goal isn’t simply to memorize another collection of muscles, tests, and techniques.
It’s learning how to answer three questions:
What am I seeing?
What am I feeling?
And what does that information tell me about how I should treat?
We’ll work through common hip presentations while connecting functional anatomy, movement assessment, palpation, and hands-on treatment into a more complete clinical picture.
This isn’t about diagnosing pathology.
It’s about developing stronger clinical reasoning within the massage therapist’s scope of practice so that the techniques you choose have a reason behind them.
Expect anatomy review, demonstration, assessment practice, guided hands-on instruction, and partner work throughout the day.
You’ll leave with more than a collection of hip techniques. You’ll leave with a framework for evaluating movement, interpreting what you find, and building a more thoughtful treatment strategy for the hip complex.
