The Georgian Group talk: Conserving Georgian HeritageIn this talk, Tom showcases the rich variety of Georgian built heritage across his region, spanning a diverse range of settings — from urban to rural, industrial to ecclesiastical, and from grand ‘polite’ architecture to vernacular structures. He offers a whistle-stop tour of The Georgian Group’s conservation and advocacy work in the North West, with a particular focus on Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Drawing on a series of case studies, he explores the complexities, nuances, and everyday challenges of conserving Georgian buildings.
Tom is the Senior Conservation Adviser for Northern England at The Georgian Group. He holds a PhD in Historical Archaeology and has worked widely across the heritage sector, including in museums, commercial archaeology, and built heritage conservation.
The Georgian Group is a national amenity society dedicated to the preservation and protection of buildings and landscapes dating from the Georgian period (c. 1700–1837) in England and Wales. Established in 1937, it plays a key role in safeguarding architectural heritage by advising on planning applications, campaigning against inappropriate alterations or demolitions, and promoting a wider appreciation of Georgian design and craftsmanship. Through its casework, events, and publications, the organisation supports the careful conservation of historic places while encouraging informed and sensitive stewardship.
