An employment gap may be part of your story—but it does not define your ability, your potential, or what you can contribute next.
Whether your time away from work was connected to caregiving, health challenges, incarceration or reentry, unemployment, education, family responsibilities, or another major life transition, figuring out how to explain that time to an employer can feel uncomfortable.
The Gap Isn’t the Whole Story is an interactive workshop designed to help you move beyond the gap and recognize the skills, growth, experiences, and strengths that may have developed along the way.
During this workshop, you’ll learn how to talk about an employment gap honestly and professionally without feeling like you have to tell your entire personal story. Using the Acknowledge → Strength → Bridge approach, you'll practice creating a response that acknowledges the gap, identifies what you bring to the table, and redirects the conversation toward where you're going next.
During this workshop, you will:
- Identify transferable skills developed during periods away from traditional employment
- Learn how to discuss an employment gap confidently and professionally
- Decide what information is relevant to share—and what can remain private
- Practice turning life experiences into workplace strengths
- Explore ways to address barriers that may affect your return to work
- Use AI as a tool to help translate your experiences into professional language
- Create your own response to the interview question: “Can you explain this gap in your employment?”
- Identify a practical next step toward your employment goals
This isn't about hiding your past, making excuses, or pretending the gap didn't happen.
It's about learning how to tell the rest of your story.
