The exhibition title THE FORGOTTEN ESTATE harkens to the reverie of the Victorian era, a period of extraordinary creativity, discovery, and transformation that continues to inspire artists and designers today. From the discovery and cataloging of new species to the symbolism of decorative skulls and memento mori, to the dark and imaginative writings of Edgar Allan Poe, the era offers a vast and compelling well of influence.

Art and fashion, architecture and sport, invention and industry, natural history and the macabre all flourished within a world caught between tradition and extraordinary change. It was an age of ornament, craftsmanship, curiosity, and ambition, where beauty and darkness often existed side by side.

THE FORGOTTEN ESTATE invites artists to draw from this remarkable landscape, allowing imagination to move freely through its history, symbolism, elegance, eccentricity, and mystery, then carry it into unexpected waters of contemporary creation.
And there may be no more fitting setting than Cape May, the nation’s oldest seaside resort and a town whose Victorian identity remains very much alive. Here, history is not simply preserved. It surrounds us.

With THE FORGOTTEN ESTATE, JAWBONE Gallery brings that history through its doors, not as nostalgia, but as raw material for something new. A Victorian past reimagined, transformed, and made strange again.
