THE FIRST OMEN
(2024, 119min/color, DCP) Nell Tiger Free, Ralph Ineson, Sonia Braga, Charles Dance, and Bill Nighy. Directed by Arkasha Stevenson.
In this psychological horror prequel to 1976’s THE OMEN, a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church. Soon, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her faith and that reveals a terrifying conspiracy to bring about the birth of evil incarnate. Thanks to astonishingly assured writing and direction from feature film debuter Arkasha Stevenson and an all-in lead performance by Nell Tiger Free (Apple TV’s “Servant”), this is no franchise cash-grab. It’s the horrifyingly real deal.
