The Dumb Supper: Merry Meets & Eats

✨🔥💀🎃🥀✨
Since its heartfelt beginnings in ‘23 as an intentional celebration of ends, the reputation of this gathering and the types of special people who attend speak for themselves.
But if you want allll the lore…any curiosity on The Who’s, what’s, where’s and whys are spelled out as above, so below.
The “Dumb Supper-merry meets and eats” is an Angie adaptation of a dinner tradition historically prepared and eaten in silence. “But I’m just a girl”, not a ghost and we’re a bunch of yappers, so we will most definitely be talking and that is one of the best parts.
The optional storytelling.
The communal support.
The cornucopia of human emotions.
Expect laughter and tears.
And shares about those who impacted us in ways we can no longer access whether you’re fresh in grief or it’s been years.
This gathering is open to all spiritual and secular paths.
The origins of the dumb supper were inspired by Celtic & Appalachian folklore or European and British traditions around the time of Halloween, which originated from Celtic festival of Samhain.
…But practices extend beyond certain spiritual beliefs and countries. If you’ve ever lit a candle or set a plate for someone who can no longer join you at the table, you’ve recognized certain cross-cultural practices of honoring y/our dead.
Some are familiar with “The Day of The Dead”, or “All Souls/Saints Day”, etc. Every country has names for the same human urge to honor those who came before us or to remember those we miss. Whether young or old or those “born sleeping”.
Instead of waiting for an appropriate time to talk about the hard stuff such as certain dates or around certain people, we are free to talk about necessary losses as a very real and non-discriminating part of life.
I’ll post more info about the event closer to the date…including what happens if I get summonsed to another side of the veil (aka a birth this night) We’d most likely reschedule the dinner the next day on Sunday the 8th)
but until then!
1.)Please bring intentional food & drink to share (something your grandma used to make, a snack that reminds you of someone special or something from your ancestral heritage)
2.)Dress in warm layers as the event is held at Sycamore Park District’s “Good Tymes Shelter” -an indoor/outdoor park cabin with fireplace and bonfire and warm spirits 🤪 (There are porto-potties and hand sanitizer.) Please note there is a body of water behind the shelter. I like to put glowsticks on the kids to light them up like jackolanterns after dark, but please look out for each other as always.
Feel free to wear articles of clothing that are warm, seasonally celebratory or represents someone special whom you are honoring.
Another option is to bring something to represent at the fireplace altar (a photo, candle, keepsake etc)… Or whatever your heart desires to share with a group of wonderful birds of a feather gathered together for bonfire, respectful drinking and heart felt fellowship <3
Curious how Dumb Suppers of the past have have gone?
I hoped for it to be as chicken soup-y for the soul-y as it could be for the heart and belly, along with mental health during the dark season when people sometimes miss their people even more around holidays.
The feedback I receive is as satiating as dessert.
✨🔥💀🎃🥀✨
Think of it like a prelude to or my alternative Friendsgiving. But weirder. at nighttime. More candles. And bonfires and outdoor fireplace. And flowers. And skulls. (Which isn’t scary since we have them in our heads all year long not just during “spooky” season) and whatever else your unique heart and heritage desires to share in whatever ways you know how. Let’s make some memories before we become them amidst our busy lives.
Afterall, we aren’t getting outta this alive! 🤪
You are cordially and hypothetically invited. Love,
Angie 🦋
