Released in 1982, this groundbreaking film was created without visible human actors—the entire world is brought to life through elaborate puppetry, animatronics and incredible handcrafted sets.
A few quirky facts:
🔮 The film was co-directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz—the creative forces behind many of the world’s most famous Muppets.
🧝 Concept artist Brian Froud designed the creatures and landscapes, then later worked on another cult fantasy favourite, LABYRINTH.
🎭 The towering Skeksis costumes were so heavy and difficult to see out of that performers could only work inside them for short periods.
🌌 Long before digital effects took over cinema, THE DARK CRYSTAL created an entirely new fantasy world using practical effects, detailed miniatures and puppetry.
