Architecture runs through Georgia O'Keeffe's art from her earliest childhood sketches to her final works — not merely as subject matter, but as a way of seeing and understanding. In this talk, Dr. Cody Hartley, Director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, NM, traces how O'Keeffe lived with, altered, and built the spaces around her — shaping homes and studios that served her art-making, functioned as a form of self-expression, and framed her world for continual observation, study, and inspiration.
Architecture was also fundamental to understanding new places as she traveled and relocated, from the barns of Lake George to the adobe walls of Northern New Mexico. And it situates her within a larger conversation in American art about how the nation's cities and landscapes might embody a distinct cultural identity — even as she claimed and built space, quite literally, for herself.
