About this Event

Join us for a hike to learn about the birds that call Tom Riley Park home. We will discuss bird migration and may even see some species like raptors or songbirds as they make their way south. We will also discuss Mimico Creek and general urban ecology issues like bird-friendly designs, stormwater and invasive species.

Date and time: Saturday, September 19, 2026, 10am-12pm

Meeting: We will meet at 10am at the New Horizons Community Garden, Tom Riley Park, 3216 Bloor St West before heading out for a walk through the park.

Poster photo credit: Dan Schuurman, featuring a Cape May Warbler; photo taken in Brampton in 2026.

About our speakers:
Dan works inventorying flora and fauna at Credit Valley Conservation and has volunteered and worked to collect data for several breeding bird projects. He enjoys birding, especially in his neighbourhood during spring migration.

Jon is an aquatic biologist with over 30 years experience working for GTA Conservation Authorities. He has been a birder and photographer for many years and also has an interest in animals with fur, scales and scutes.

Getting here: The nearest subway station is Islington station. Please walk east past the Bloor/Aberfoyle Crescent intersection. New Horizons Community Garden is north of the parking lot. If you are driving, the nearest parking lot is Carpark 512 at 3220 Bloor St West.

Alternatively, please see here for Google Maps directions to our meeting location.

Accessibility: Tom Riley is paved, although we will walk over some unpaved portions of the park. There are public bathrooms at the Memorial Pool And Health Club, 44 Montgomery Rd. Please wear sunscreen, long sleeve tops and pants to protect against ticks, and bring water. If you have binoculars, please bring them.

Attendance: Free with an online RSVP. All ages and dogs on leashes welcome.
