The Austin Lecture on Contemporary Mexico presents "In Search of One’s Own Language," a lecture by Mexican filmmaker Juan Carlos Rulfo and a discussion of his documentary series One Hundred Years with Juan Rulfo [Cien años con Juan Rulfo].
"In Search of One’s Own Language" is a reflection on the process of developing a unique cinematic voice. Drawing on his experience as a filmmaker and as the son of the renowned Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, Juan Carlos Rulfo will discuss how he forged his own visual perspective and artistic language. Rather than a struggle to break free from an extraordinary literary legacy, his journey reveals an ongoing dialogue with it, one in which his father’s work has served as a companion, a source of inspiration, and a starting point for creative exploration.
Juan Carlos Rulfo is a Mexican director, photographer, and producer. He studied Communication Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana–Xochimilco and Film Directing at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC), where he specialized in documentary filmmaking.
His work has received recognition at major international film festivals, including Best Documentary awards at Sundance, BAFICI, Biarritz, Miami, Havana, Karlovy Vary, and Guadalajara, as well as five Ariel Awards. He has been a fellow of the Guggenheim, Sundance, Ford, Rockefeller, and MacArthur Foundations.
His films emerge from an intimate gaze on people and the places they inhabit. For Rulfo, creative documentary is a way of exploring personal roots and discovering an individual voice through which to view our spaces, emotions, and identities. It is also a means of preserving the memory of territories and the people who inhabit them in the face of time and the transformations that threaten to erase their stories.
Lecture presented in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation.
