The Art of Smarter Manufacturing: From Additive Processes to Digital Twins and AI.
About this Event

Inaugural Lecture with Professor Javaid Butt, Professor of Additive and Sustainable Manufacturing.

Industrial revolutions have continually changed how products are designed, manufactured, and delivered, with each wave creating new relationships among people, machines, and information. Additive manufacturing marked an important development within this evolution by enabling components to be built layer by layer directly from digital designs. Its significance extends beyond rapid prototyping to complex geometries, material efficiency, product customisation, and new approaches to production.

Professor Javaid Butt's journey began within this changing landscape. It has explored the design and development of additive processes, the behaviour of advanced materials, and the manufacture of products with tailored properties. His work revealed a recurring challenge. A digital design describes what we intend to manufacture, but the performance of the finished product emerges from interactions between the material, process, machine, and operating environment. Addressing that challenge shifted Professor Butt’s work towards combining physics-based simulation, artificial intelligence, and digital twins to understand process behaviour, predict product performance, and support more informed manufacturing decisions. Through funded collaborations with industrial partners, he has translated these approaches into practical applications addressing product development, process reliability, quality, and resource efficiency. These industrial applications have reinforced the need for digital models that remain connected to the physical process and evolve as operating conditions change. A digital twin provides this connection by linking a physical system with a virtual representation that is updated through data. Simulation can explore how the system may respond under different conditions, while AI can identify complex relationships and accelerate predictions across large design and process spaces. When supported by validation and engineering expertise, these technologies can improve process control, product development, maintenance planning, and production decisions.

This inaugural lecture reflects on Professor Javaid Butt's research journey and considers how these technologies are changing the future of manufacturing, showing how research questions evolve, how different disciplines can converge around a complex problem, and how experimental evidence can move from the laboratory towards industrial application. This lecture will offer an accessible exploration of the technologies defining how future products may be designed, manufactured, and improved.

About Professor Javaid Butt

Professor Butt’s career has focused on advanced manufacturing, particularly the interdisciplinary domains of additive manufacturing, digital twins, smart manufacturing, and Industry 4.0. He has developed a robust portfolio of externally funded projects, amounting to over £7.2 million, from different funding sources. He has made contributions to national and international research assessment through roles with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Peer Review College, the UKRI Talent Panel, the British Council's International Science Partnerships Fund, and a range of international research funding evaluation bodies. He also serves as an External Examiner for Digital Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering programmes, supporting academic quality assurance and the maintenance of sector-wide standards in higher education.

Before joining Bucks New University he was a Professor of Manufacturing and Product Design at Birmingham City University, leading the Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Research Group and Associate Professor of Digital Manufacturing at Anglia Ruskin University, holding several research leadership roles.

A major highlight of Professor Javaid Butt’s career has been building research communities that connect academic excellence with practical industrial and societal impact. This has included leading multiple externally funded projects, mentoring colleagues to secure their first external funding, developing research-informed project-based learning in engineering, and creating international digital manufacturing education programmes.

Inaugural lectures are celebration of our academics’ outstanding research excellence and an achievement of contributions to their field of research. These celebratory events will enable the University community to come together to give conferment to academics who have achieved the accolade of Professorship.

This is your chance to ask questions and delve deeper into the topics discussed.

Everyone is welcome and these lectures are free to attend.
