About this Event
Join us for a calm, hands-on introduction to Sashiko, a traditional Japanese embroidery technique. Led by Japanese textile artist Mika Sembongi, this 1.5-hour in-person workshop will introduce you to the art of mindful stitching, where creativity meets the beauty of traditional craftsmanship.
Meaning “little stabs”, Sashiko originated in Japan during the Edo period as a practical way for farmers and fishermen to reinforce and repair worn clothing. Over time, it evolved into a decorative art form, celebrated for its beautiful geometric patterns and its thoughtful, sustainable approach to textiles.
What you'll learn
During the workshop, you'll discover the fundamentals of Sashiko, including:
- How to thread and use traditional Sashiko needles.
- The stories and meanings behind traditional Japanese patterns.
- How to trace designs and create beautiful patterns using Sashiko stitching.
- How to use Sashiko techniques to patch, repair and extend the life of your clothes.
You'll begin stitching your own set of four Sashiko coasters during the session, learning the techniques you need to complete them at home.
Sashiko is particularly well suited to mending medium-weight woven fabrics such as denim, making it a wonderful skill for repairing and refreshing jeans, workwear and jackets. It's a practical, creative way to give much-loved garments a new lease of life while helping to reduce textile waste.
Materials and take-home kit
All tools and materials will be provided during the workshop.
Your ticket also includes a Sew Your Own Sashiko Coasters kit (worth £30), containing everything you need to complete your set of four coasters at home. The kit includes templates, step-by-step instructions, needles, threads, marking pens and fabrics.
