About this Event
Discover the beauty and depth of Karesansui (枯山水), the traditional Japanese dry landscape garden, also known as a Japanese rock garden, in a hands-on workshop led by a master gardener.
Learn the specialized knowledge, principles, and techniques that have shaped Japanese rock gardens, then put what you learn into practice as you create your own miniature Karesansui garden under direct expert guidance.
What to Expect
- Master Guidance: Discover the design principles, aesthetics, and symbolic stone arrangements behind traditional dry landscape gardens.
- Ripple Pattern Artistry: Learn the technique of raking Samon (砂紋)—the symbolic water ripple patterns in the sand—and practice creating your own designs.
- Hands-On Creation: Assemble, arrange, and take home your personalized mini garden.
- Everything Included: Registration includes everything you need to create your garden, including a plastic container, sand, stones, and a 4-piece rake set. You’ll take home your completed garden, along with any remaining materials, so you can keep enjoying and tending it at home. *Please note: The container shown in the photo is wooden; a plastic container will be provided for the workshop.
- Bring Zen Home: Your mini garden is more than a keepsake—place it on your desk or favourite corner at home, and return to the sand whenever you need a peaceful moment.

About the Season of Japan Event
This workshop is part of the Season of Japan event, a full day of Japanese arts, culture, and history at the Nikkei Centre.
