About this Event

Course Overview

With continuing reductions in public funding, post-Covid changes and an increasingly insecure world, the challenges for Boards of cultural organisations are greater than they have ever been. It is essential that Board members are properly equipped to fulfill their role in setting a strategic overview, helping to develop sustainable business models and giving full support to senior staff. The day will address the following questions and outline current best practice in cultural governance.

  • How do volunteer Board members fulfill their duty of overseeing complex organisations?
  • What is the role of the Board in artistic planning and risk?
  • How do Boards ensure that they are properly diverse?
  • What is the role of the Board in income generation?

Suitable For:

  • Chairs and Board Members both new and experienced of cultural organisations and senior staff who work with them.

Course Outline

This is an interactive day using group work with opportunities to learn and share from each other, as well as from the Course Tutor, an expert in governance who has worked as an executive and non-executive in a range of cultural organisations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the key responsibilities of a trustee/board member
  • Have a good understanding of best practice in cultural governance
  • Be equipped for the future, with some insight into the likely challenges ahead for the sector
  • Gain greater confidence in governing and/or supporting the governance of arts organisations

Prue Skene has wide experience of governance both from the executive side (as Executive Director of Ballet Rambert and the English Shakespeare Company) and through sitting on and chairing a number of arts Boards. She is Head Governance Associate of Clore Leadership and regularly delivers a programme of Board away and training days to a large variety of cultural organisations.
