About this Event

Award winning author and journalist Barnaby Phillips tells the story of how Britain plundered the magnificent gold regalia from the West African kingdom of Asante, in modern day Ghana, in a series of wars in the 19th century, and examines what should happen to these treasures today.

About the speaker:

Barnaby Phillips has spent many years as a BBC correspondent in Africa. His books include Loot - Britain and the Benin Bronzes (2021) and The African Kingdom of Gold - Britain and the Asante Treasure (2026), which was longlisted for the prestigious Cundill History Prize. He lives in London, works for an elephant conservation organisation, and also teaches and lectures on colonial history, museums, and provenance.
