'Thames Estuaries' by Paul Medley and Bruno Guastalla is the result of a series of investigations of the Thames Estuary in 2025 and 2026. We have been following the Thames Path downstream from central London, from Purfleet to Canvey Island and Gravesend to the Isle of Grain, and have gathered images of an environment that for many centuries has been critical for both trade and defence. Shipping even today is dependent on the flow of the river and the movement of the tide and it is an area where the present and the past overlap in the presence of structures long forgotten and others recently constructed. The images presented take the viewer along the confined space of the path itself, across the extended vistas of the river and the mud flats on one side and the private fenced in world of commerce and industry on the other.
