Based on techniques that sit between art, design, mathematics & architecture, paper tessellation transforms flat paper into intricate, repeating three-dimensional structures through folding alone.
Guided by NWOP artist Jacky Cheng, participants will learn foundational tessellation & paper-folding methods before creating their own sculptural forms, exploring rhythm, pattern, light & shadow along the way.
Presented in conjunction with the National Works on Paper exhibition, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with one of the exhibition's exhibiting artists & gain insight into the material processes that inform her practice.
Whether you're an artist, designer, architect, student, maker or simply curious about the possibilities of paper, this workshop will introduce new ways of thinking about form, structure & spatial design.
No prior experience required. Bookings essential as numbers are limited. Morning tea included.
Jacky Cheng is a visual artist, educator & facilitator based on Yawuru Country in Broome, Western Australia. Born in Malaysia & of Chinese heritage, Jacky's multidisciplinary practice explores themes of identity, migration, cultural memory & belonging through paper, fibre and sculptural forms. With a background in architecture, she is recognised for her intricate works that combine repetition, folding & craftsmanship to transform humble materials into complex spatial compositions.
Jacky is a finalist in the National Works on Paper prize & has been the recipient of major national awards including the John Stringer Prize & the Fremantle Print Award.
