About this Event
TEEN LIFE DRAWING
Art, music and a bit of headspace.
For ages 14–19 | GCSE & A-Level students | All abilities welcome
Get your head out of your books for a couple of hours and connect with like minded humans.
Mocks, revision, coursework, exams… we know there’s a lot going on. But looking after your wellbeing is just as important as getting the grades.
That Art Place is creating a space for teenagers to switch off, get creative, meet other teens and spend a little time doing something that doesn’t involve a screen, a textbook or an exam.
Whether you’re studying GCSE or A-Level Art, thinking about a creative career, or simply fancy trying something different, you’re very welcome. You don’t have to be studying art to come along. You don’t have to be good.
A DIFFERENT ARTIST. A DIFFERENT STYLE. EVERY WEEK.
Session 1: Egon Schiele
Each session takes inspiration from a different artist, art movement or period in art history.
One week we might explore the expressive lines and theatrical characters of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Another, the striking poses and angular figures of Tamara de Lempicka.
But we won’t stop at the obvious ones or the familiar names from school. We’ll explore artists, illustrators and creative movements from across the centuries and around the world, introducing you to different ways of seeing and drawing.
Our experienced life models will be dressed and styled to reflect the artist or period we’re exploring, giving you an interesting subject to work from each week.
There is no full nudity at these sessions - although some skin will be in show.
DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS. FIND YOUR OWN STYLE.
Working from a live model is one of the best ways to develop your observational drawing skills, whatever your style.
You’ll have the opportunity to explore:
* Gesture, movement and expressive mark-making
* Proportion, shape and the human form
* Light, shadow, tone and texture
* Different drawing materials and techniques
* Your own interpretation of what you see
These are guided rather than formally taught sessions. We’ll introduce the artist, provide some creative direction and structure the poses, but there won’t be a teacher looking over your shoulder telling you how to draw.
It’s a chance to experiment, make mistakes, try something new and discover your own style.
If you’re studying art, it’s also a brilliant opportunity to broaden your artist research, develop your observational work and add something different to your sketchbook or portfolio. We are always happy to look over portfolios.
GOOD MUSIC. GOOD COMPANY. NO PRESSURE.
We want these sessions to feel more like a creative evening out than another lesson.
The bar will be open for soft drinks and snacks, and all drawing materials are provided, although you’re welcome to bring your own favourites.
Come with friends or come on your own. You don’t need to be an amazing artist, and you certainly don’t need to produce a masterpiece.
Just put your phone away for a little while, pick up a pencil and see what happens.
A LITTLE ABOUT US
That Art Place was created by sisters Gemma and Kellie Waugh, who have decades of combined experience working creatively in the film and television industry.
Gemma trained at the London College of Fashion and has spent her career working as a professional hair and make-up artist in film and television.
Kellie has a background in typography and graphic design and works as a Graphic Art Director in film, specialising in period graphics and visual storytelling with a personal love of abstract art.
Between us, we’ve spent our careers surrounded by art, design, history and creativity. We want to share some of that experience and introduce young people to the extraordinary variety of artists and styles out there.
