THIS ISN'T JUST A RIDE.Backroad '27 is a 3-day gravel adventure through some of the most iconic and remote landscapes in the South Island , and like all Backroads, it's not quite what you expect.
🗺️ THE ROUTE — THE GREAT CENTRAL LOOP
Queenstown → Around the Mountains Trail → Nevis Valley → Cromwell → Dunstan Trail → Kawarau Gorge Trail → Queenstown
~435 km | ~4,350 m climbing | 3 epic days
📅 THE PROGRAMME
Arrive Thursday 18 March (Queenstown) for a gear check and briefing.
Day 1 (Friday) — Ride the lake to the 12 Mile Delta, hop the bike barge to Walter Peak, then follow sections of the Around the Mountains Trail through remote high country into Lumsden. ~135 km, ~1,100 m.
Day 2 (Saturday) — The Big One. Early start, deep into the backcountry, over the Nevis Valley and Duffy Saddle into Cromwell. Vast, remote, and absolutely worth it. ~160 km, ~2,300 m.
Day 3 (Sunday) — Your choice adventure. Ride the Lake Dunstan Trail from Cromwell toward Clyde, link the Kawarau Gorge Trail, and roll back into Queenstown your way. ~140 km, ~1,400 m.
