How & why the Northern Lights Appear in Scotland
A talk with Dr Ciaran Beggan, British Geological Survey
The Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis) are created by the interaction of the Earth and Sun’s magnetic fields. What are they and why is it they occur so sporadically?
Dr Ciaran Beggan, of the British Geological Survey, will describe the mechanism and physics (at an accessible level) about how explosions on the Sun’s surface, called Coronal Mass Ejections, lead to intense displays of the Northern Lights on Earth, focusing on Scotland.
