Ian Wellens is an artisan, musician and writer based in Devon. One day, he was asked by his teenage grandson to explain about Gaza - out of this was borne this beautifully-illustrated book which tells the story of Palestine and its people from 1880 to the present day. With fivefruit-themed sections which break up the history, it zooms in on places and people to provide emotional depth.
The book is partly a streamlined history homing in on the core issues of the Palestine/Israel problem, partly a poetic reflection on place and people, partly an impassioned cry for justice. By weaving these three things together in one text, Ian Wellens has created something genuinely new.
