Taking Stock of Global Indigenous Rights: The 20th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
A Lecture in Transnational Justice by Professor Megan Davis (UNSW)
Tuesday 10th November at 6:00 pm

In 2027, the world will mark twenty years since the United Nations General Assembly adopted the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
Despite its significance as an international human rights instrument, implementation has been piecemeal and uneven. While some states have given effect to UNDRIP through domestic legislation, most continue to treat it as non-binding soft law. More recently, a growing number of states have begun to retreat from the recognition and protection of Indigenous peoples’ rights. This lecture will take stock of UNDRIP twenty years on, examine key developments in the global retreat from Indigenous rights and consider the political and legal forces driving this reversal.

About the Speaker:

Scientia Professor Dr Megan Davis is the Pro Vice-Chancellor Society and Balnaves Chair in Constitutional Law at UNSW Sydney. A globally renowned constitutional lawyer, she specializes in Indigenous rights, democratic governance, and constitutional recognition. Professor Davis co-chairs the Uluru Dialogue and designed the deliberative process that led to the historic Uluru Statement from the Heart. A Fellow of three Australian learned academies and a former United Nations expert on Indigenous rights, her accolades include the Sydney Peace Prize, the 2024 PeaceWomen Award, and TIME Magazine’s NEXT100. She has recently completed visiting professorships at Harvard Law School and Penn Carey Law.

The lecture forms part of the research and public engagement work taking place at CTLS this year and will be followed by a reception.
