“Every Turtle Has a Story: How Citizen Scientists Turn Photos Into Research and Conservation”
A photograph of a sea turtle can be more than a holiday memory! In this talk, we will dive into how thousands of photographs contributed by divers, tourists, and local residents can become scientific evidence, and help researchers identify individual turtles, monitoring the numbers of aggregation and understand how long they stay, and what threats they face. Join us as our speaker Dr. Chia-Ling Fong teaches us about Taiwan’s amazing sea turtles!
SPEAKER BIO:
馮加伶 Dr. Chia-Ling Fong
Co-Founder, TurtleSpot Taiwan
Chia-Ling is the co-founder of TurtleSpot Taiwan (https://turtlespottw.org/ | https://www.facebook.com/groups/turtlespotintw) and is the current President-Elect of the International Sea Turtle Society. Her journey with sea turtles began as a volunteer patrolling the nesting beaches of Lanyu. She later studied the health of wild and rescued turtles. Learning to SCUBA dive opened a new chapter, taking her research into the underwater world of coral reefs, and inspired her to work with citizen scientists to study the distribution, foraging ecology, and conservation challenges of sea turtles around Taiwan — hoping to connect biodiversity research with public engagement and science education.
