Experience Julie Wedman's unaccompanied violin through four centuries of music, from Baroque masters to contemporary Canadian composers.
About this Event

Voices of Violin

explores the astonishing range of the unaccompanied violin across more than three centuries. Performed by Julie Wedman, and stripped of accompaniment, a single instrument becomes many: storyteller, dancer, orator, and virtuoso by turns. The program moves from the concise, improvisatory gestures of 17th- and 18th-century preludes and dances—by Corbett, Purcell, Lonati, Telemann, Vitali, Jacquet de La Guerre, and Vilsmaÿr—to the monumental unaccompanied works of Biber and Bach, before Andrew Balfour carries that same solitary voice into the present day. Across four centuries, the question remains constant: how can four strings speak with so many voices?

About Julia Wedman

Violinist Julia Wedman grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After studies at the University of Western Ontario, Indiana University, and University of Toronto, she joined Tafelmusik in 2005 and quickly developed a reputation for her solo performances with the group. In addition to being featured regularly on the group’s home series in Toronto, Julia has performed solos on tours in Canada, the US, Germany, France, Mexico, Puerto Rico, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. She was a long-time member of I FURIOSI and is one quarter of the Eybler String Quartet, whose discography includes music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Vanhal, Eybler, and the recently re-discovered quartets of Franz Weiss. Julia holds the great honour of following in the footsteps of former Tafelmusik Music Director Jeanne Lamon as the Principal Baroque Leader of Symphony Nova Scotia, and has recently been invited to guest direct groups across Canada, including the Saskatoon Symphony, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Victoria Symphony, Victoria Baroque, String Theory Baroque Ensemble (Calgary) as well as the Capetown Baroque Orchestra (South Africa). In addition to her work as concertmaster for the Toronto Bach Festival Orchestra, Julia is also the concertmaster of the JUNO award-winning ensemble L’Harmonie des Saisons, based in Granby, Quebec, and is featured on their Bach and Vivaldi concerti recordings. Her highly acclaimed debut CD of Heinrich Biber’s Mystery Sonatas was followed in 2023 by the complete works for solo violin by J.S. Bach
