About this Event
Trying to write music with standard notation can be difficult and require a lot of technical knowledge - but there is another way! In this workshop we will be discovering the exciting practice of learning about and making our own graphic scores!
To begin with we will investigate the world of synesthesia in which people are able to ‘hear colours’ or ‘see sounds’. We will delve into different artists and musicians who are affected by this and see how it affects their creativity and the unique ways they see, hear and experience the world. Using this as our inspiration we will explore colour, shape and form to experiment with how we want to represent different sounds visually, instead of using musical notation, which is how you create a graphic score. We will also use mark making to act as inspiration to create conventional and unconventional sounds!
In the second half of the workshop we will build on what we have created visually and transfer it into the sound world. We will be using existing instruments, and new ones which we will construct in this workshop, to play along to what we have made and bring our graphic scores to life!
All instruments and abilities welcome - bring along anything that might be at home, even if you have never played it! If not, there will be plenty of percussion to join in with in this class.
